tert-Butyl acetate Usage And Synthesis
|
Chemical Properties |
tert-Butyl acetate or t-butyl acetate is a colorless flammable liquid with a camphoror blueberry-like smell. It is used as a solvent in the production of lacquers, enamels, inks, adhesives, thinners, and industrial cleaners. It is also used as an additive to improve the antiknock properties of motor fuels. tert-Butyl acetate has three isomers: n-butyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, and sec-butyl acetate. |
|
Physical properties |
Colorless liquid with a fruity odor. Odor threshold concentration in water is 4 ppm (CHRIS, 1994). Nagata and Takeuchi (1990) reported an odor threshold concentration of 71 ppbv. |
|
Uses |
tert-Butyl acetate is common industrial solvent used in the making of lacquers, artificial leather, airplane dope, perfume, and as a food additive. |
|
Air & Water Reactions |
Highly flammable. Insoluble in water. |
|
storage |
tert-Butyl acetate should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in tightly sealed containers that are labeled in accordance with regulatory standards. Containers of tert butyl acetate should be protected from physical damage and should be stored separately from nitrates, strong oxidizers, strong acids, strong alkalis, heat, sparks, and open flame. Because containers that formerly contained tert-butyl acetate may still hold product resi dues, they should be handled appropriately |

Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 37℃. Keep the container tightly closed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, and alkalis, and avoid mixed storage. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. It is forbidden to use mechanical equipment and tools that easily generate sparks. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and suitable storage materials.
Resolve resolution
1. Acetic anhydride method: mix tert-butanol, acetic anhydride and anhydrous zinc chloride and heat to reflux for 2h, then cool, distill until the temperature reaches 110℃, wash the crude distillate with water, and then wash it with 10% potassium carbonate. It can be dried with anhydrous potassium carbonate, and then distilled to collect the 95~96℃ distillate to obtain the finished product.
2. Acetyl chloride method: mix tert-butanol, N,N-dimethylaniline and anhydrous ethyl ether, heat to reflux, then add acetyl chloride, control the feeding temperature, maintain a medium reflux speed, when adding 2/3 acetyl chloride, N,N-dimethylaniline hydrochloride was crystallized, cooled in an ice bath, and then heated for 1h. Add water to dissolve all the solids, separate the ether layer, extract with cold 10% sulfuric acid, wash once with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, dry with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and fractionate to obtain the finished product.
3. Acetyl chloride-magnesium method: mix magnesium powder, tert-butanol and anhydrous ether, drop acetyl chloride and anhydrous ether solution, add cooling, add cold potassium carbonate aqueous solution to decompose it, and extract with ether 3 It is dried with calcium chloride and distilled to obtain the finished product
