Atazanavir sold under the trade name Reyataz is an antiretroviral drug of the protease inhibitor (PI) class. Like other antiretroviruses, it is used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
The difference between Atazanavir and other PIs is that it can be given once a day (instead of requiring multiple doses per day) and has a smaller effect on the patient's lipid distribution (the amount of cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood). Like other protease inhibitors, it is only used in combination with other HIV drugs.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it on June 20, 2003. Atazanavir was the first PI approved for once-daily dosing and seems unlikely to cause lipodystrophy and elevated cholesterol as a side effect. It may not be cross-resistant with other PIs. When boosted with ritonavir, its effectiveness is equivalent to that of lopinavir as a salvage treatment for patients with a certain degree of resistance, although the boost of ritonavir reduces the metabolism of atazanavir Advantage.
It appears on the list of essential medicines of the World Health Organization and is one of the most important medicines required by the basic health system.
