| Chemical Properties | 1-Dodecanethiol is a colourless liquid organic compound, with a characteristic odour. Soluble in methanol, ether, acetone, benzene, ethyl acetate, insoluble in water. |
| Uses | 1-Dodecanethiol is used in the preparation of hydrophobic or mixed self-assembled monolayers. It is also employed as a chain transfer agent for radical polymerization. Further, it is utilized as a polymerization inhibitor in polyurethane and neoprene adhesives, which finds application in the footwear industry. In addition to this, it acts as a protein regenerating agent used for the regeneration of native proteins from mercuribenzoate. |

Method of preparation
1. It can be prepared by the action of dodecanol vapor and hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a catalyst.
2. Add bromododecane, thiourea and 95% ethanol into the stirred reaction vessel, heat to reflux with stirring, react for 3 hours, distill out the ethanol and recover it for recycling. Then add 10% sodium hydroxide solution, heat to reflux, stir and react for 2h. After cooling, let it stand for stratification and remove the oil layer to form the crude mercaptans. Add hydrochloric acid to acidify the water layer and then add benzene, stir for a period of time, and then stand still. The benzene layer is combined with crude mercaptans, washed with water, dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and then sent to a distillation device. After benzene is evaporated, vacuum distillation is performed, and the fraction at 165 to 169°C at 5.2kPa is collected as the finished product.
3. Heat bromododecane, thiourea and 95% ethanol to reflux for reaction, then add sodium hydroxide solution and heat. After the reaction is completed, cool and stand for stratification, the oil layer is the crude mercaptan. The crude product is washed, dried, distilled and distilled under reduced pressure to become the finished product
