Today we will talk about another versatile chemical:

Magnesium Sulfate

Magnesium Sulfate heptahydrate

Magnesium sulfate or anhydrous magnesium sulfate is a magnesium-containing compound with the molecular formula MgSO4 (or MgSO4·7H2O). Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is a commonly used chemical reagent and drying reagent. However, magnesium sulfate is often referred to as magnesium sulfate heptahydrate, because it is not easy to deliquesce and is easier to weigh than anhydrous magnesium sulfate, which is convenient for quantitative control in industry.

Application of magnesium sulfate in industry:

1. In the printing and dyeing industry, it is used as a thin cotton cloth, as a weighting agent for cotton and silk, as a filler for kapok products, as a coloring salt for blue dyes, and as an alkali absorbent in black liquid;

2. The microbial industry is used as a medium component, as an additive for brewing, to supplement the magnesium in the brewing water, as a nutrient source during fermentation;

3. Used as a filler in the leather industry to enhance heat resistance;

4. Used as a stabilizer for producing fresh yeast, monosodium glutamate and calcium hydrogen phosphate in toothpaste production in light industry;

5. As a coagulant aid in the cement industry;

6. It is also used in industries such as papermaking, prevention, fertilizer, porcelain, paint, feed, explosives and fireproof materials.

Application of Magnesium Sulfate in Medicine:

1. Used for constipation, abnormal fermentation in the intestine, and also used with repellent; used with activated charcoal to treat food or drug poisoning;

2. Used for obstructive jaundice and chronic cholecystitis;

3. Used for convulsions, eclampsia, uremia, tetanus, hypertensive encephalopathy and acute renal hypertensive crisis, etc.;

4. It is also used for patients with angina pectoris who have frequent attacks but other treatment effects are not good, and the effect is better for patients with hypertension;

5. Hot compress for external application to reduce inflammation and swelling;

6. Not absorbed when taken orally, used as a laxative and duodenal drainage agent;

7. For convulsions caused by various reasons, especially eclampsia, it has a good anticonvulsant effect.
