At about 2:20 pm on January 13, 2021, LG Display's P8 panel factory in Wollong-myeon, Paju, had a leak of ammonium hazardous chemicals. 7 people were sent to the hospital for treatment, of which 2 were seriously injured.
After the accident, the local police and fire department received the news and immediately rushed to the scene to start disposal.
It is initially believed that the leakage accident was caused by the staff during the pipeline connection work; according to the fire department's estimation, about 300 liters of ammonium hazardous chemicals were leaked in the accident; the source of the leakage was about 25 minutes after the accident. Was successfully cut off. The Korean Environment Agency and the fire brigade completed the relevant treatments about 4 hours after the accident after measuring the chemical residues. The South Korean police and the South Korean National Institute of Scientific Research plan to continue to conduct joint identification of the accident scene in the morning of the 14th.
The hazardous chemical leaked in the accident was Tetra Methyl Ammonium Hydrooxide·TMAH. Commercially, TMAH is usually sold as a concentrated water or methanol solution. The solid and solution are colorless, and yellow when impure. Pure TMAH has almost no odor, but the samples often have a strong fishy smell, because it contains impurities of trimethylamine. TMAH has a large and wide range of industrial and scientific applications, for example, as a developer (resist removing liquid) in the yellow light process.
On the day after the accident, LG Display issued a statement of apology and stated that it would fully cooperate with relevant departments to investigate the cause of the accident.
