The broader API market reflects even larger scale-global API market size reached USD 245.26 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow to USD 457.75 billion by 2034 at a CAGR of 7.26%. Behind these numbers lie real drivers: an aging global population, rising prevalence of chronic diseases, and the continued expansion of personalized medicine.

But growth is only half the story. The real question for procurement teams is: How stable is the supply chain behind this growth?

The China-India Dynamic: Concentration and Dependency

The most significant policy development in recent months came in April 2026, when the United States formally invoked Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imported patented drugs and corresponding pharmaceutical ingredients, citing national security concerns.

Generic drugs and biosimilars are currently exempt, but the administration has indicated it will reassess this position within one year, retaining the option to extend tariffs to generic products in the future.

While policy and trade dynamics reshape the market, regulatory scrutiny on quality has intensified. In 2025 and early 2026, the FDA issued a series of Warning Letters to India-based API manufacturers, citing significant deviations from Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations.

One notable case involved an Indian manufacturer where inspectors found that the quality unit failed to document the review and release of multiple API batches, did not prepare and maintain batch records, and exhibited multiple data integrity violations. Another inspection uncovered failures in facility design to prevent contamination, inadequate process validation, and missing stability testing programs. These cases illustrate a broader trend: regulatory agencies worldwide are applying higher standards and more frequent inspections, with less tolerance for compliance gaps.

Industry experts note that the CDMO and fine chemicals sector is now being shaped by three critical forces: geopolitical regionalization and the increasing requirement for domestic US manufacturing capacity; the competition against clients' internal build strategies; and structural market bipolarity as consolidation accelerates.

The old playbook-built on predictable trade flows, concentrated manufacturing hubs, and long-term vendor relationships optimized for cost-is breaking. As one industry analysis puts it: "What's breaking in 2026 is not just the supply chain, but the underlying operating model that effectively governed the sector for the last 30 years." The metric that matters most is no longer necessarily "cheapest," but "guaranteed."

2. Prioritize documented compliance. Regulatory pressure is not easing. Suppliers should be able to demonstrate a track record of successful inspections, robust quality systems, and verifiable data integrity practices.

3. Value stability alongside price. In an environment where tariffs, geopolitical shifts, and supply disruptions are increasingly common, a supplier's ability to maintain consistent delivery and transparent communication may outweigh marginal cost differences.
