Recently, the Indian State Oil Company (IOC) stated that it plans to build two second-generation (2G) bio-refineries in the southern state of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Each 2G biorefinery will cost 6 billion Indian rupees (approximately US$83 million) and will be able to produce 500,000 liters of ethanol a day from the remaining food and waste of the Food Company of India (FCI) and agricultural waste such as wheat and rice straw. It is reported that Indian Petroleum's plan is still in the initial stage. Once all the permits are obtained, the construction of the biorefinery will be completed in approximately 18 to 24 months.
