South Africa's coal exports to Europe have surged this year as European countries scramble to look for alternatives to Russian energy. Coal exports to Europe have increased eightfold in the first half of 2022, with the average export price rising from $75 a ton last year to $240 a ton this year, a well-known coal exporter from Johannesburg said recently.
In addition, data from the Richards Coal Port Group, South Africa's major coal export port, also showed that its coal exports rose 720 percent in the first half of 2022 from the same period last year. The surge in exports has put pressure on the transport sector, now bringing rapid shipments of coal to port due to limited capacity.
