Use
|
1. Amino Acid Medication
Used in amino acid infusions. Often combined with iron supplements and vitamins. When used with vitamin B6, it helps improve depression and prevent pellagra. As a sedative for insomnia, it is used in combination with L-DOPA for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
Note: It has shown carcinogenic effects in experimental animals. Adverse reactions may include nausea, loss of appetite, and drowsiness. It should not be used in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
2. Nutritional Supplement
Tryptophan is a limiting amino acid found in egg white protein, fish, and cornmeal, and is present in relatively low amounts in grains such as rice. It can be combined with lysine, methionine, and threonine for use in amino acid fortification. Adding 0.02% tryptophan and 0.1% lysine to corn-based products can significantly enhance protein nutritional value.
It is an important component of amino acid infusions and comprehensive amino acid preparations. Tryptophan can also be used in the treatment of niacin deficiency.
