On the afternoon of 10 March, an explosion occurred at the PROQUIBASA chemical plant located in the Via Trajana Street in the industrial zone of Montsol S, near the border between Barcelona and Sant Adrii de Bes S. At least one person has been killed and 12 injured in the blast, according to current statistics.

Since the site of the explosion was related to the chemical industry, the Catalan chemical sector has initiated an emergency plan (PLASEQCAT) and is coordinating with the Barcelona Fire Brigade and the relevant authorities to assess the risk of chemical pollution.

Photographs sent back from the scene show buildings and parked vehicles around the plant in varying degrees of damage. The ground is covered with building blocks, concrete blocks and steel bars. Meanwhile, dust and smoke from the explosion had spread for miles.

At the scene, Betev reported that Albert Batlle, the deputy mayor in charge of safety prevention, had gone to the scene of the accident with the commander of the Barcelona city police. The area has been cordoned off and police officers have been outfitted with face masks.
