Recently, the construction of my country’s first megaton-level CCUS project (CCUS is the English abbreviation for carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage) in the Gao 89-Fan 142 well area of Shengli Oilfield in Gaoqing County, Shandong Province officially started construction. After the completion of the project, the carbon dioxide captured in Linzi District of the city will span a hundred kilometers and be transported to Gaoqing County for oil extraction in the oil field. The mega-ton CCUS project launched by Sinopec this time consists of two parts: Qilu Petrochemical's carbon dioxide capture and Shengli Oilfield's carbon dioxide flooding and storage. Qilu Petrochemical Capture provides carbon dioxide to be transported to Shengli Oilfield for oil displacement and storage, realizing the integrated application of carbon dioxide capture, oil displacement and storage.

According to the plan, Shengli Oilfield will build 10 unmanned gas injection stations to inject carbon dioxide captured by Qilu Petrochemical into 73 nearby wells. At the same time, all oil and gas gathering and transportation systems will be transported by closed pipes to further increase the carbon dioxide storage rate.

According to expert calculations, the implementation of this project can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1 million tons per year, which is equivalent to stopping nearly 600,000 economic cars for one year. The project is expected to be put into production at the end of the year. After its completion, it will become the largest CCUS demonstration base for the entire industry chain in China, providing application cases for the country to promote the large-scale development of CCUS.

It is understood that in 2020, Sinopec’s capture of carbon dioxide has reached 1.3 million tons, of which 300,000 tons will be used for oilfield flooding. Studies have shown that my country will have more than 1 billion tons of carbon emissions in the future to rely on CCUS to achieve neutralization. my country has large petroleum geological reserves suitable for carbon dioxide flooding, and accelerating the development of the CCUS industry will provide support for ensuring national energy security.
