Main Applications
Anticonvulsant: Adjuvant treatment for partial seizures (with or without secondary generalization) in adults and children over 3 years old; also for adjuvant therapy of generalized tonic-clonic seizures in children over 12 years old.
Analgesia: First-line treatment for adult postherpetic neuralgia (PHN); adjuvant treatment for other neuropathic pains (e.g., diabetic peripheral neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia).
Other Applications: Adjuvant treatment for anxiety disorders, restless legs syndrome (RLS) and alcohol withdrawal syndrome in clinical practice, with good safety and tolerability
Mechanism of ActionPrecautions for use
It does not bind to GABA receptors nor is metabolized to GABA or GABA agonists. Its primary mechanism is selectively binding to the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the presynaptic membrane of the central nervous system, reducing calcium influx and inhibiting the release of excitatory neurotransmitters (e.g., glutamate, norepinephrine), thereby decreasing neuronal hyperexcitability to exert anticonvulsant, analgesic and neuropathic pain-relieving effects.
